Overview

Sustainability for Co-op means reducing environmental impacts, investing in local communities and operating in a financially responsible manner. This will be accomplished by seeking solutions that promote efficiency, innovation and collaboration – including strategy development guided by stakeholders – and can be used across Western Canada.

Environmental Sustainability

We care about our communities and the environment we share. Care for the Environment is one of our brand pillars, part of what makes Co-op a different kind of business. Under that umbrella, we focus on making positive change in four key areas: reducing emissions, eliminating waste, promoting regeneration, and purchasing responsibly. Key initiatives include solar canopies at cardlocks, Grown With Purpose, our sustainable seafood policy and reducing the amount of food waste that goes to landfills through the Loop program. At Co-op, we know Change Begins in our Backyard.

Social Responsibility

We care about supporting initiatives that engage employees and give back to the communities where we live and work. FCL’s philanthropic focus includes employee-directed giving, strategic community partnerships and important programs in our communities. These initiatives include our Community Investment Fund, Co-op Community Spaces capital funding program, long-term partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, and more. FCL also advocates for the co-operative model through funding for research and development initiatives.

Remediation

We care about the safe and sustainable management of current and former operational sites throughout the CRS. FCL continues to look for improved ways to address these issues and supports ground-breaking research to find sustainable ways to safely clean up historic fuel and fertilizer sites. Not only does FCL conduct its own research, it collaborates with government, industry and academia. In 2015, FCL helped fund an industrial research chair in this field and was a founding partner in the Sustainable In-Situ Remediation Co-operative Alliance (SIRCA), a group of researchers, universities and co-operatives working to advance research activities focusing on on-site remediation technologies.
